What Really Happens in the Practice Room?  Recent research on self-regulation and practicing strategies in collegiate piano students (Parts 1 and 2)

Much of piano learning happens between lessons, when students must decide for themselves what to practice, which strategies to use, and how to judge whether their work is improving. In these two programs, Tiffany Tao and Jane Southcott discuss two studies of university piano practice. The first explores how Chinese piano students in Australia set goals, manage motivation, seek help, and respond to teacher and examination expectations. The second uses practice videos and follow-up interviews to examine how pianists use familiar strategies for different purposes and connect their actions while solving problems during practice. The discussion offers practical ideas for teachers, students, and researchers.
